{"id":2651,"date":"2025-05-01T03:25:43","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T03:25:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nugu.lt\/us\/?p=2651"},"modified":"2025-12-28T13:05:29","modified_gmt":"2025-12-28T13:05:29","slug":"karaoke-pragovka-gallery-prague-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nugu.lt\/?p=2651","title":{"rendered":"Karaoke, Pragovka Gallery, Prague, 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Karaoke (2001) is part of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/pragovkagallery.com\/exhibition\/breaking-the-course-of-the-european-boomerang\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/pragovkagallery.com\/exhibition\/breaking-the-course-of-the-european-boomerang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Breaking the Course of the European Boomerang<\/a><\/em>, and exhibition curated by Kriszti\u00e1n G\u00e1bor T\u00f6r\u00f6k\u00a0Una Mathiesen Gjerde at the Pragovka Gallery in Prague in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the intersection of performance and video art, Nomeda &amp; Gediminas Urbonas\u2019 work <em>Karaoke <\/em>(2001) invites its audience to reflect upon the rapid changements that took place in former communist republics as the cold war came to its end, and capitalism came out as the only way forward. On the final workday before the Lithuanian Savings Bank &#8211; the country\u2019s last state owned-bank &#8211; was privatized in 2001, the artist duo staged a series of actions that rubbed up against the happy-go-lucky narrative of a post- communist Lithuania. Bank employees, alongside actors, performed ABBA\u2019s <em>Money, Money, Money<\/em> inside the bank\u2019s lobby: the camera pans across a chorus of women in demure skirts and pantyhose while the give alternately dispassionate and spirited deliveries of the song &#8211; \u00abI work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay \/ Ain\u2019t it sad \/ And still there never seem to be single penny left for me \/ That\u2019s too bad\u00bb &#8211; edited together into five seemingly continuous takes.
